There are several scales within the Indian Administrative Service and ultimately based upon these scales the IAS officers are appointed for particular designation on the basis of their service experience.

1. Junior Time Scale :

This is the initial probationary post that is offered for individuals who are fresh recruits. An individual has to complete 4 years as Junior Time Scale in order to complete the training period until further designation is provided. So when the recruit completes the probationary period then the next post would be of a SDO (Sub-divisional Officer ) or SDM (Sub-divisional Magistrate).

2. Senior Time Scale :

After the completion of 4 years of service an IAS personnel is then promoted to the Senior Time Scale officer. Various posts such as Additional District Magistrate (ADM), CEO , Zilla Parishad or Chief Development Officer is offered for Senior Time Scale officer individuals.

3. Junior Administrative Grade :

In order to achieve this grade the individuals must complete their 9 years of service which includes 2-3 yeas as ADM the officer is then appointed as District Magistrate (DM) or Collector of a particular district. In some cases officers are also offered with the post of Joint Secretary of a ministry of the state.

4. Selection Grade :

This stage of the service can be achieved only when an officer complete 12 years of service. Selection Grade officers can remain a District Magistrate in a district or can become a Special Secretary of a Government department.

5. Super Time Scale :

To reach this stage of Super Time Scale the officer has to be in serve for about 16 years. Additional Secretary or Secretary in departments of State Government or Divisional Commissioner in field posting including Joint Secretary of a Ministry of the Government of India can be obtain by officers of this scale.

6. Higher Administrative Grade :

Officers with the experience of at least 25 years achieve the Higher Administrative Grade. In terms of a State an IAS officer of this scale can be appointed as Principle Secretary of a Department and in case of Central Government the rank would be of Additional Secretary.

7. Apex Scale :

Only those officers who have a minimum experience of 30 years are conferred with the Apex Scale. This scale offers the post of Secretaries of various departments of Central Government and also the Chief Secretary of a state.

8. Cabinet Secretary Scale :
